By now, we all might have read the story of how a butcher was gruesomely killed over alleged blasphemy in Sokoto. At first, when the story hit the social media platforms, many could care less about the perpetrators.
I can remember the Executive Governor says “Sokoto is a Muslim State”. Alright, no one will ever counter this. But will he turn a blind eye on this nefarious act? Yeah that’s also a responsibility he must account for in Islam.
Fresh facts emerged after the killing of Usman. This sheds light on what type of person he was, the illiteracy of the perpetrators and negligence of the security forces.
As Usman Buda embarked on his routine trip to the Sokoto Fish and Vegetable market, little did he know that it would tragically end with his brutal killing.
Accused of blasphemy by his business partners, Usman fell victim to a violent attack at the Sokoto main abattoir.
Against the teachings of holy prophet Muhammad (SAW), Usman was murdered in a gruesome manner. This signifies how the perpetrators disobeyed the prophet commandments.
This shows how deep illiteracy has eaten into the minds of people in Sokoto state. Islamic ruling prohibits mob action and emphasizes on regard to constituted authority.
Nuhu Bala, a witness at the scene, denied the claims of blasphemy and clarified that Usman was merely preaching to a beggar who misused the name of the Holy Prophet for alms.
Misunderstanding his intentions, some colleagues labeled him a non-believer and began assaulting him.
Despite intervention attempts, the outnumbered bystanders failed to save Usman. Despite efforts to shield him, three plainclothes policemen present at the scene called for backup, which unfortunately arrived too late.
Blasphemy: Police Intervention
The enraged mob aimed to desecrate Usman’s body, but the police intervened, dispersing the crowd and closing the abattoir.
They evacuated the victim’s body, depositing it at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital morgue.
No Way Usman Committed Blasphemy
Malam Yusuf, a neighbor of the deceased, vehemently refuted the allegations of blasphemy, emphasizing Usman’s devoutness.
Another market butcher, located near Usman’s stand, expressed shock at the incident and attested to Usman’s respectful behavior towards religious matters.
Malam Abdullahi Buda, Usman’s father, lamented the loss of his son, who had been the family’s sole provider.
As an elderly individual, he expressed concern for Usman’s six young children and appealed to Senator Aliyu Wamakko and the Sokoto State government for support.
Usman’s elder brother, Murtala Muhammad, highlighted Usman’s lifelong dedication to religious education and pursuit of knowledge.
Usman’s commitment to memorizing the Holy Qur’an and attending lectures underscored his religious fervor and generosity.
Blasphemy: Demand for Justice
Sheikh Musa Lukuwa, the imam who led Usman’s funeral prayer, called upon the Sokoto State government and security agencies to ensure the perpetrators face legal consequences.
Imams at various Eid grounds echoed this sentiment, warning against reprisals and emphasizing the need for a swift resolution.
Blasphemy in Sokoto
The gruesome killing of Usman is a wake-up call for Islamic authorities in Sokoto state to constitute the judiciary panel to handle cases of blasphemy.
Therefore, this panel should serve as the sole recognised body to declare a suspect as blasphemer or not.
The shocking incident that claimed Usman Buda’s life has stirred emotions within the community and also across the country.
Witnesses, neighbors, and religious leaders are demanding justice for Usman, emphasizing his innocence and religious devotion.
