Technical Officer, Media & Communications

Project Description:

Northeast Nigeria faces a growing humanitarian crisis with many internally displaced persons requiring emergency assistance. These IDPs live among host communities, lacking resources and livelihoods, resulting in severe malnutrition and food insecurity. FHI 360 has been working in Nigeria for over 30 years and is expanding its activities in Borno state to address the IDP crisis.

FHI 360 is expanding its expertise by responding to this humanitarian crisis through integrated WASH, Health, Nutrition, and Protection interventions.

Basic Function:

The Technical Officer-Media and Communications will collaborate with the Grants & Communication Coordinator to create and deliver memorandums, organizational materials, announcements, success stories, and events related to communications. They will focus on developing clear, concise, and coordinated organizational messaging across multiple platforms and facilitating dialogue between staff and leadership.

Technical Officer Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research and write various communications, including infographics, success stories, press releases, photo journals, videos, and donor presentations, in collaboration with the Grants & Communication Coordinator.
  • Provide support for publicity and promotion of special events and community outreach activities.
  • Develop and implement communication and public relations strategies to promote humanitarian projects, services, and programs.
  • Prepare promotional and informational materials, such as factsheets, articles, blog posts, bulletins, pamphlets, and videos.
  • Provide photography support and create versions of program publications and IEC materials in Hausa and Kanuri languages.
  • Collaborate with in-house originators to ensure appropriate designs for publications.
  • Perform assigned duties and responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes:

  • Knowledge of communication, public relations, and journalism principles, theories, and methods.
  • Strong understanding of FHI 360 and donor IEC and branding policies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent video and photography skills.
  • Ability to write, edit, and develop publications effectively.
  • Ability to work well with others and maintain compatibility among project staff and recipients of assistance.
  • Ability to travel to field sites regularly to document program activities.
  • Ability to write effectively for specific audiences.
  • Well-developed computer skills.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of workflow with minimal supervision.
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and understanding of political and ethical issues related to emergency response programs.
  • Preferably, proficiency in local languages.
  • Preferred experience working with external print vendors.
  • Proficiency in word processing and graphic design software packages, preferably Adobe Creative, Quark, Quark Express, Corel Draw, and Microsoft Publisher.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a graphic design-related field with 5-7 years of relevant experience in print and electronic design work.
  • Alternatively, a Master’s degree in a graphic design-related field with 3-5 years of relevant experience in print and electronic design work.
  • Proficiency in MAC-based software packages, such as Adobe Web/Design Collection, Final Cut Pro, Maya 3D.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like PHP, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Demonstrated success in multicultural environments.
  • Prior experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO).
  • Familiarity with Nigerian public health sector systems and NGOs and CBOs is desired.
  • Sound understanding of humanitarian assistance programming.
